NPLW WA: Perth RedStar win third consecutive league title with two games to spare
The NPLW WA’s unstoppable force have further cemented their status as the state’s top dogs, as Perth RedStar claimed their third straight women’s league title.
With two games to go in the season, RedStar wrapped up their third premiership on the bounce after they smashed Fremantle City 6-0 at Hilton Park.
The win put them 11 points clear of second-placed Perth SC as RedStar once again showed the gap between them and the rest of the competition.
Under coach Carlos Vega Mena, RedStar won 17 of their first 19 matches this season and remain on track for a second clean sweep in three years, having also won this year;s Night Series and with next month’s State Cup final and Top Four Cup to come.
RedStar raced out of the blocks against Fremantle as they went two goals up within 15 minutes thanks to Olivia Wood and Japanese star Reina Kagami.
It was 3-0 by half-time as Emily Dunn found the net, before Sarah Carroll’s cross was nodded home by Kagami after the break for her 19th goal of the season.
It got better for RedStar on a wet and windy afternoon as Sarah Carroll’s inviting cross was headed in by Kagami who netted her 19th league goal of 2024.
Fremantle had a chance to pull a goal back from the penalty spot, but Gabby Dal Busco thwarted Tanika Lala’s effort, and RedStar veteran Renee Leota emerged from the bench to grab a late double.
The win means RedStar have surpassed last season’s league-winning tally of 49 points and if they win their final two games of the season, they will match the 57 points they accrued in their undefeated campaign of 2022.
