Heartbreaking pictures have emerged showing the devastating impact of Severe Tropical Cyclone Zelia on WA’s Pilbara region.
The category four system made landfall about 12.30pm on Friday, and while Port Hedland was spared from the cyclone’s destructive core, smaller communities to the town’s east were hit hard.
A video taken by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA showed properties in Gooda Binya — a community near Marble Bar — partially submerged and cars completely swallowed by floodwaters.
Carlindie Station, about 75km south-east of Port Hedland, was also hit hard, with a Facebook post revealing the caretaker Kellie Jackman, her husband Bill and child Taylor have “lost everything”.
Ash Tiller said the family has “been through hell” after the category four system tore through the station, destroying everything in its path.
“Morning everyone as you may be aware Kellie Jackman (and) Taylor Jackman were hit hard last night by Cyclone Zelia,” Ms Tiller wrote on Facebook.
“They have lost everything and are awaiting SES to come give them support.
“They are all safe and well just absolutely devastated, nothing is salvageable, they have nothing left, not even the cars.
“They are unsure about the horses at the moment, I know a lot of people have asked. This is something they are assessing when they can.”
The cyclonic weather also brought intense rainfall to the area, with some communities having to be evacuated.
While the full extent of damage is not yet known, WA Premier Roger Cook confirmed no loss of life or injury had been reported overnight.
