DFES fire investigation team unable to determine cause of bushfire that ripped through shire of Irwin

The Shire of Irwin has thanked firefighters, community volunteers and local farmers for their efforts on the ground to battle a blaze that came close to threatening the coastal town of Dongara last month, after an investigation into the cause of the fire fell short. Department of Fire and Emergency Services confirmed fire investigation teams have been unable to establish what sparked the bushfire that tore through 3500 hectares of land on December 28-29. It is unknown whether the ignition source was deliberate or not. According to the shire, 68 appliances and more than 178 people were on the ground helping bring the blaze under control, including volunteer firefighters, DFES, police, ambulance crews, local businesses, organisations and shire staff. Crews were able to take control of the flames in what was a sweltering 40C Sunday, after forecast strong winds did not eventuate. Pastoral land and bushland was in the firing line, with crop stubble, fencing and other farm assets up in flames. The perimeter of the bushfire reached 50km and damaged 16 power poles in Yardarino, Mt Adams and Milo. Shire president Mark Leonard acknowledged those who sacrificed their time and efforts over the holiday period to help fight the fire. “The shire of Irwin would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the local fire fighting volunteers and those from neighbouring shires,” he said. “Furthermore, we would also like to thank the farmers of the shire for their critical role in assisting to contain the fire. “There was also a long list of local businesses and organisations that offered assistance to support those personnel at the fire front. “The commitment and team effort from all involved through some difficult and dangerous weather conditions and the Christmas family holiday period are greatly appreciated.” Cr Leonard also thanked DFES and shire staff for their contributions, noting the combined effort of everyone involved was crucial in managing the blaze. “We are grateful to all those who came together to support and protect our community,” he said.
