Rockingham police are appealing for information after a man was hit in the head with a bottle and had to be hospitalised in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police say the male victim was walking with his friend along Challenger Avenue, near Sutherland Parade, in Parmelia between 1am and 1.45am.

They were approached by an unknown male, who then hit the victim over the head with a glass bottle before kicking him in the head several times after he fell to the ground.

The victim was helped by residents of a nearby home before taking himself to Rockingham General Hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious facial and head injuries.

The unknown man was described as between age 25 and 30, around 180cm tall and wearing a basketball-style jersey with light chino shorts and white shoes. He was also carrying a black bum bag on his shoulder with wireless earphones in his ears.

He was described as having a muscular build with straight black hair, trimmed facial hair and a dark or olive complexion.
