Three-time boxing world champion Israel Vazquez has died aged 46.

The champion passed away following a gruelling battle with cancer.

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed the news on Tuesday.

“Thank you Israel for the so many great memories that you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it. You are now eternal , rest in peace, everything will be all right,” Mr Sulaiman wrote on Instagram.

Vazquez made his professional debut aged just 17 and won his first nine fights before picking up his first major world title in 2004.

He famously fought Rafael Marquez four times from 2007 and 2010, with each of the boxers picking up two wins each before the last fight retired Marquez for good.
