Respected for antagonising renowned hard man Jared Waera-Hargreaves, Penrith firebrand Spencer Leniu is being backed to win a maiden State of Origin call-up and turn his attention to needling Queensland's pack.

Leniu and Waerea-Hargreaves were involved in a heated altercation in the Panthers' 30-6 win over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night.

Penrith were incensed by Waerea-Hargreaves' use of an elbow in a tackle that caused prop Moses Leota to leave the field in the final 10 minutes.

Tensions continued to simmer as Waerea-Hargreaves and the young Panthers forward squared off, with the former triggering a further skirmish when he threw a water bottle at Leniu.

The pair escaped with fines on Sunday and won't face suspension, clearing the way for Leniu to potentially earn a Blues call-up for Origin II in Brisbane on June 21.

Teammate Jarome Luai - himself unsure if he'll be retained for Origin II despite setting up two of NSW's tries in the series-opening loss to Queensland - is leading calls for Leniu to be unleashed on the Maroons.

"We love that stuff," Luai said of Leniu's showdown with Waerea-Hargreaves, which ended with Leniu challenging the Roosters enforcer to end the feud in the "car park".

"I know Spenny is a smart footballer. He's a front-rower but he's got some brains in that head.

"I hope he's in the (Blues) conversation because everyone knows what he brings.

"He's got that fireball energy and when he's out there he can change the momentum of the game.

"Fingers crossed, because he's been doing that consistently this year and if he's handed that opportunity he's going to relish that arena. He's built for it.

"Watch out, man, he's a fireball. We call him 'Fireball' at Penrith."

Leniu had been in calculations for a NSW call-up for game two before suffering a ruptured testicle in a training mishap.

He will pay $3600 in fines to avoid suspension, while Waerea-Hargreaves has been slugged with a $6000 penalty due to his lengthy rap sheet.

Leniu is set to join the Roosters next year and Luai said he hoped the head-to-head battle wouldn't make things "awkward".

"He (Waerea-Hargreaves) had a fair bit to say," Luai said.

"Especially after the elbows as well, which sort of ticked us all off, and I think that was just a build-up of a bit of frustration.

"It's heat of the battle stuff and, you know, what happens on the field stays on the field.

"But there's got to be a line in the sand, and we'd all had enough of him."
