West Australian golfer Minjee Lee victorious in Dubai Moonlight Classic
Minjee Lee has won the Dubai Moonlight Classic in a playoff to secure her first title of 2020 and her second on the Ladies European Tour.
Victory at the event, which made history last year when it became the world’s first professional day-night golf tournament, is Lee’s eighth professional career success.
“This year has been tough but this is a nice way to close it out,” Lee said.
“I’ve really enjoyed the format and everything about the week, my second time playing night golf was certainly memorable.”
The 24-year-old won the co-sanctioned LET and ALPG Victorian Open in 2018, a tournament she also won in 2014 as an amateur, and is a five-times champion on the LPGA.
Australian star Lee and Celine Boutier returned to play the 18th under the floodlights at Emirates Golf Club after they finished tied at 10-under par after 54 holes of regulation play.
Boutier left her birdie effort short before Lee holed from 20-feet to seal victory on the first extra hole and claim the ’coffee pot inspired’ trophy and 36,266 euros ($A59,335) winner’s prize money.
“I couldn’t really see the break too well on the last hole but I thought it would be about two cups outside the right and luckily I hit it hard enough and it dropped,” Perth native Lee said.
“It feels pretty special to be here playing at night time and the course has been amazing.
“It’s been a really fun week.”
Lee, the highest-ranked player in the field this week at No.9, carded a three- under 69 in the final round to join Boutier in the playoff.
Frenchwoman Boutier had led for most of the day, until a late bogey proved costly, signing for a 68.
Lee and Boutier finished a shot clear of a trio of players in Nuria Iturrioz of Spain (67), Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck (70) and second-round leader Caroline Hedwall (72) of Sweden.
Australian young gun Stephanie Kyriacou carded a third consecutive 71 to share 17th at three-under while her compatriot Whitney Hiller (75) slid down the leaderboard to finish at nine-over.
Starting Friday’s closing round in a share of third, Lee had birdies on the 1st, 10th, 14th and 16th as she chased down Boutier, who had been bogey free until an untimely error on the par-5 16th.
