Big Bash League: Sam Konstas fan hilariously forgets hand brake in haste to gather his signature

Have you ever been so desperate for the signature of your favourite cricketer you’ve executed the perfect reverse park into a disabled parking bay only to then leave your hand brake off?

Well, that’s just how one unlucky man’s attempt to grab rising star Sam Konstas’ ‘John Hancock’ panned out.

Konstas became a household name overnight after a spectacular debut in the Boxing Day Test against India, taking the fight to the world’s best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, with audacity and making 60.

His new-found stardom was too much for one Sydney fan to bear, Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder dropping the camera footage of his hilarious attempt for a signature on Instagram.

The man’s attempt starts well after spotting Konstas walking with his kit bag and quickly flicking into the adjacent car park.

However, his day quickly turned to mud as he got out of the car, not noticing the vehicle had already begun to roll forward.

As the fan crosses the road his white SUV gathers momentum, heading towards a parked car.

On the brink of getting to Konstas, the driver realises what’s happening with his vehicle and, in his attempt to scramble back, nearly tumbles.

But all his efforts end in vain, his car knocking into a stationary vehicle and his signature book empty.

The Thunder confirmed no one was hurt.

Fans are not the only ones in a twist over the 19-year-old opener.

Indian media had had their fill of Konstas after their Border-Gavaskar Trophy series defeat, but, ahead of next summer’s Ashes, English press have taken an early shot at knocking the youngster’s confidence.

“There was a sense during the India series of Konstas being installed as a cricketing version of Raygun the Olympic breakdancer, a fun, gimmicky approximation of the real thing,” journalist Steve James wrote for The Times.

“This is a nation that seems convinced the future of cricket is a spunky, mulletted, wispy-moustachioed bloke who hasn’t scored any runs but whacks it in interesting ways (see also: Jake Fraser-McGurk).

“Konstas will have a long and lucrative career in the form the sport now takes. But what are the odds he has already made his highest Test score?”
