AFL Draft: Adelaide snub Luke Edwards, son of dual premiership star Tyson Edwards

Adelaide has turned its back on the son of a club legend, telling young Luke Edwards they will not take him as a father-son draft pick next month.

The 18-year-old son of dual premiership star Tyson Edwards was widely considered to be a first round pick before the COVID shutdown and will now head into the draft without any guarantee.

Edwards’ manager Michael Doughty told The Advertiser he was “disappointed” by the Crows decision but was pleased the youngster could now move on.

In a statement, Adelaide confirmed it would not lodge the paperwork for the young Glenelg midfielder.

“Luke is a quality young man and the Club obviously has a long and valued relationship with the Edwards family,” Crows recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie said.

“We want to be fair to him and ensure he has every opportunity to enter the AFL system and the open draft looms as the best option.

“Like every year, we will stay true to our talent order, which Luke remains part of, but we are not in a position to give a guarantee.”

The Crows hold a string of early picks, with four inside the top 23, and weren’t prepared to part with those in order to snap up Edwards.

Edwards’ father played 321 games for the Crows in his 15-year career, including the 1997 and 1998 premierships.

Edwards’ older brother Jackson was taken by the Crows as a father-son selection in 2017, but was delisted at the end of 2018 without playing a senior game.

AFL clubs have until this Wednesday to lodge the necessary father-son and academy paperwork with the AFL ahead of next month’s draft.
