French prosecutors have requested an 18-month suspended prison sentence for veteran actor Gerard Depardieu, who is on trial for the alleged sexual assault of two women in 2021.

If convicted, Depardieu would avoid jail time, provided he complies with certain conditions, including mandatory psychological treatment and registration on the sex offender list. Prosecutors also called for a $US21,500 ($A34,100) fine.

In his closing statement at the Paris trial, prosecutor Laurent Guy underscored the gravity of the allegations.

"Someone can be an excellent actor or a devoted father, but that has nothing to do with the crimes they may commit," he said, urging the court to hold Depardieu accountable as it would any other defendant.

The two women - a set decorator and an assistant director - accused the 76-year-old French cinema icon of indecently touching their backsides, breasts and genital areas in 2021 during the filming of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters), directed by Jean Becker.

Depardieu denied assaulting either woman.

Regarding the set decorator's allegations, the actor admitted to touching her hips but insisted it was not in a sexual manner.

In a three-hour closing statement, Depardieu's lawyer, Jérémie Assous, called for his acquittal, arguing that no assault had taken place.

He dismissed the assistant director's accusations as fabricated and described the set decorator's claims as implausible.

Assous also questioned several witness statements, alleging the case was riddled with lies and inconsistencies.

"For three years, I have been dragged through the mud," Depardieu said at the trial's conclusion.

The court will deliver its verdict on May 13.
