Tropical cyclone Errol may make for wet and windy weekend in Kimberley

WA’s north is on alert after tropical cyclone Errol formed more than 500km off the Kimberley coast overnight, potentially bringing wet and windy weather across the weekend.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the category two system was 510km north north-west of Broome at 2am on Wednesday.
“From Thursday, Errol is expected to turn south-east towards the coast and peak in intensity as a severe tropical cyclone,” the bureau said.
“By Friday, Errol should weaken as it approaches the west Kimberley coast.
“Tropical cyclone Errol will not have any direct impact on the WA coast within the next 48 hours.”
The weather system is moving west at 13km/h and away from the coast. It is expected to turn back towards WA by Thursday.
A forecast tracking map predicts the system will reach a category three system before it deintensifies to a category 2, then a tropical low on Friday.
The map forecasts gale force winds could hit the coast around Cape Leveque by 2am on Saturday.
There are no weather warnings in place for residents throughout the Kimberley but they are urged to keep up to date with the latest advice.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services Kimberley Supt Leon Gardiner said residents should start preparing for potential flooding and winds over the weekend.
“The key thing is to stay informed and make sure that you’re prepared for the onset of severe weather, which could include damaging winds, heavy rainfall and any flooding that might result in road closures,” he told ABC Kimberley.
“If you are planning on travelling around the Kimberley and Pilbara, make sure that you have enough food and water and fuel.
“Make sure you’re taking that time now to prepare your property and secure loose items, tidy up any debris around your home.
“If you’re going camping this weekend, make sure you have a plan in place to stay informed and retreat out of those areas.”
