Col Blanch confirms double demerits, more speed cameras and cops on WA roads this Xmas to tackle road toll

Double demerit points, more speed cameras and cops on the highways will lead a Christmas blitz to try and arrest 2024’s horror road toll. The campaign starts at midnight (Thursday) and runs until midnight on Sunday January 5. Police Commissioner Col Blanch confirmed booze and drug buses, hidden cameras and visible highway patrol cars would be out in force over the festive period. This year, WA has recorded its worst road toll since 2016, with 178 deaths. “There are a small number of road users who think that the laws don’t apply to them, we will be using every capability over this period to ensure we take those people off the roads,” Mr Blanch said. “Eighty per cent of our deaths on our roads occur within the 400km arc of influence around Perth, we will be out there over the next 17 days, in particular, during this double demerit points period over Christmas. “And we will be going after the criminals who are on the road.” Mr Blanch said he wanted people to celebrate Christmas without any tragedy. He said police would target the “fatal five” factors that lead to serious or fatal incidents — speed, drug or drink driving, lack of seatbelts or helmets, distracted driving and fatigue. “We want them to arrive safe at their destination, but if that’s not you, and you don’t want to follow the law, we are coming for you.,” he said. Police Minister Paul Papalia said there was also a heightened policing effort in the regions through ‘operation regional influence’ — which was sending more speed cameras into the regions. “The sad fact is, it only takes one incidence, one incidence of inattention, one incidence not wearing your seat belt, driving too fast, drinking . . . or driving while you’re fatigued — and that could be the last thing you ever do,” Mr Papalia said. “People tend to be going places where they might not normally travel, so they’re not necessarily familiar with the roads. “And people are celebrating and in a relaxed mood, and they might let their guard down. “So just a reminder to take responsibility for yourself and for others and get home safely.” Acting Commander of road policing Mike Peters said his officers did not want to deliver the news a loved one had died over the Christmas period. “The message is simple, don’t speed,” he said. “Every police vehicle across the State will be undertaking some form of enforcement and our safety camera fleet will also be out in force. “One life lost on our roads is one too many, we urge everyone to drive safe this holiday season and keep in mind the safety of yourself and the safety of others. “I urge you to drive carefully so everyone can come home safely”
