Vegemite hits back at US influencer Morgan Riddle after failed Vegemite bet

Vegemite has hit back at US tennis star Taylor Fritz’s influencer girlfriend after she mistakenly swallowed an entire mouthful of the iconic spread on Instagram live.

Morgan Riddle has been a highlight of the sidelines at this year’s Australian Open, keeping Aussies on their toes with her courtside fits and playful gestures to get Fritz’s attention.

Three days ago, she wagered her boyfriend that if he won his next match against title contender Stefanos Tsitsipas she would eat a “jar of vegemite”.

Now, the iconic spread has hit back at the American influencer, questioning the rookie mistake of eating the spread on its own.

“If you’re going to do it, at least do it right. Australia, thoughts?” the Vegemite social media team posted on Monday night.

She popped online an hour later to reply, saying: “Sourdough bread with heaps of buttah?”

The challenge can be traced back to Saturday when Riddle shared the bet with her more than 220,000 Instagram followers.

“If @taylor_fritz wins again ill eat a jar of vegemite on live,” she captioned a post of her posing outside Rod Laver Arena with a red Chanel bag.

When Fritz beat Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets on Sunday, he was presented with a large jar of the national spread and Riddle was snapped with a sly grin on her face, clearly accepting defeat.

Later that evening, she went live on Instagram with a video of her taking a raw spoonful of Vegemite – no bread or butter in sight.

The unsightly helping would be enough to make any seasoned Vegemite eater scoff, but Riddle immediately gagged and ran out of frame to spit it out.

“That was disgusting,” she said after coming back on camera to drink a sip of kombucha.

“If anyone had to eat a whole jar of that, nope.”
