Teenager dead in island shark attack

A teenage girl is dead after she was bitten by a shark while swimming at a popular tourist destination.

The victim sustained life threatening injuries to her upper body while swimming at Woorim Beach at Bribie Island, Queensland Ambulance Service said.

Queensland Police confirmed the young woman died soon after 5pm and a report was being prepared for the coroner.

Nationally over the last decade there have been an average of 20 shark attacks where people have been injured, according to the Australian Shark-Incident Database.
