South West exposure sites listed by WA Health after measles case was identified at Bunbury Regional Hospital

WA Health have listed several South West locations from Bunbury to Busselton as potential exposure sites after a measles case was identified at Bunbury Regional Hospital last week. Measles is a highly contagious, airborne viral illness spread by tiny droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a red, non-itchy rash three or four days later. The rash usually starts on the face before spreading to the rest of the body. The Department of Health issued an alert on Thursday saying it was working closely with the hospital to identify and manage any exposure sites to staff, patients and visitors. Acting director of the communicable disease control directorate Paul Effler said contact tracing and infection control measures were under way. Community members who visited the hospital between March 19 and 23 have been urged to monitor for symptoms. “It is important that anyone under 60 who has not received two doses of measles vaccine and visited Bunbury Regional Hospital between March 19 and 23, 2025, should monitor for symptoms, particularly fever and respiratory illness,” Dr Effler said. “They should continue to monitor themselves for seven to 18 days after the visit.” Mr Effler also said the incident was a timely reminder to ensure all West Australians were up do date with their vaccinations. “People born after 1965 are encouraged to check their immunisation status to make sure they have had two doses of the measles vaccine,” he said. “Making sure you are protected is especially important for people planning overseas travel as there are measles outbreaks occurring in several countries throughout the world.” The full list of exposure sites will be regularly updated on the Department of Health website. The South West exposure sites as of Thursday included multiple cafe and shopping areas in Busselton, as well as the Dalyellup Woolworths, a playground in Capel, cafe and shopping precincts in Bunbury between March 17 and March 26.
