Zacheaus Wells: 19-year-old accused of bragging to mates after allegedly stabbing uncle for wearing his jacket

A 19-year-old allegedly bragged to his mates after police say he stabbed his uncle in the street — puncturing his lung — because he was wearing his jacket. Zacheaus Wells did not enter a plea to the grievous bodily harm charge when he appeared in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Thursday, but a home detention report was ordered after his lawyer David Pawson made an application. Police claim Mr Wells was a passenger in a car with his friends on February 13 when he ordered the driver to pull over after spotting his uncle walking along the street in Boulder. They say Mr Wells yelled at his uncle before pulling out a 30cm hunting knife from his waistband and stabbing him in the shoulder. Police say Mr Wells returned to the car and “bragged” about stabbing his uncle to his friends. The victim allegedly ran to a nearby home for help and the occupant drove him to hospital. The wound punctured the victim’s lung and the court was told if not for medical intervention, the man’s lung would have continued to fill with blood and he likely would have died. The prosecutor told the court Mr Wells declined a formal interview after he was arrested, but in explanation he told police his uncle had been wearing his jacket. Magistrate William Yoo ordered the home detention report but warned Mr Wells even if there was a favourable report, he may still not release him on bail.
