A schoolteacher has been arrested for allegedly possessing child abuse material.

NSW Police launched the investigation on December 3 following reports a 23-year-old male teacher was in possession of child abuse material.

Police executed a search warrant at a Port Stephens school in the NSW Hunter Region the following day.

Several devices were seized for forensic examination.

The 23-year-old was arrested at Maitland Police Station on December 13 and charged with possessing child abuse material.

He was granted strict conditional bail and is set to front the Maitland Local Court on January 15.
