Geraldton’s Dirranie Kirby receives baggy black cap in special presentation recognising women in cricket

Geraldton’s Dirranie Kirby has been recognised for her contributions to WA cricket, receiving her baggy black cap at a special retrospective presentation hosted by the WA Cricket Association. The ceremony, held at the WACA Ground recently, celebrated the 316 women who have represented WA in open-age cricket. Kirby, who played for the Western Fury in the Women’s National Cricket League during the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 seasons, was presented with the honour by Avril Fahey, former Australian cricketer and current chair of the WACA board. For Kirby, the moment was particularly poignant as it was followed by seeing her personal picket on the WACA boundary fence for the first time — a sentimental gift from her father on her birthday. “To be presented with a baggy black cap was a great honour,” she said. “Being surrounded by past, present and future legends of the game was pretty special too. “It was inspiring to hear the stories of what our trailblazers endured to play cricket compared to my time, and then compared to what opportunities exist now.” “It really highlighted how far the sport has come and how much progress has been made.” Kirby reflected on the challenges of balancing elite cricket with her life commitments during her playing days. “I moved to Geraldton in 1998, and the travel became unsustainable,” she said. “I’d leave work at lunchtime on Friday, fly interstate Friday night, play cricket on Saturday and Sunday, then fly straight back to Perth after the game to make it back to work by Monday lunchtime at the latest. “It was a demanding schedule, but the chance to play for the Western Fury and compete at that level was absolutely worth it.” For Kirby, the ceremony was not only a recognition of her career, but also an acknowledgement of the role she played in shaping the future of women’s cricket. “To know that I’ve been a part of history that has now made it possible for young girls and women to make a career playing cricket is humbling,” she said. “The progress made since my playing days is incredible, and I feel proud to have been a small part of that journey.” The presentation was also an opportunity for players to reconnect with teammates and share memories. “It was so meaningful to be part of the ceremony and to reflect on those years,” she said. “Being at the WACA, which holds so much history, surrounded by people who understand the journey of women’s cricket, made it even more special.” The honour caps off a stellar sporting year for Kirby, who won a gold medal at the Masters World Cup in hockey in November.
