King Charles gives Kate Diana’s old title of Princess of Wales as William made Prince of Wales
King Charles has bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on his eldest son William and daughter-in-law Kate, passing on the titles that he and his late wife Diana previously held.
“With Catherine (Kate) beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given,” Charles said in his first address to the nation as sovereign.
The Princess of Wales title was rested after the death of Diana, with Charles’ wife Camilla instead being known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles, who became Prince of Wales in 1958, automatically became king on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, on Thursday.
The Prince and Princess of Wales’s social media accounts have been changed from The Duke and Duchess and Cambridge reflect their new titles.
The adjustment was made just a day after it was switched to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, following the death of the Queen.
WIlliam will take on the Duchy of Cornwall - the private estate Charles has managed for more than 50 years.
He will also take on Charles’ Scottish titles - the Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.
Meanwhile Camilla has been officially made Queen consort - a role given with the Queen’s blessing before her death.
In his speech, King Charles paid tribute to his “darling wife” of 17 years.
“I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage seventeen years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort,” he said.
“I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much.”
