Glenn Maxwell made just 14 for Victoria’s second XI after being listed as “fill in” on the scoreboard

Glenn Maxwell hit his first ball for six in an appearance for the Victorian second XI which was so unlikely his name didn’t even appear on the Play HQ website which was tracking the live clash in Melbourne. A day after he turned 36, the Australian white-ball star, making a maiden red-ball appearance for the summer, and first in the second XI for nearly 15 years, was listed as “fill-in”, which Cricket Victoria was adamant was a glitch. The live stream just listed a long line of asterisks where Maxwell’s name should have been when he came out to bat. He bowled six overs and took a wicket, a caught and bowled, with “fill-in” getting the credit, as Queensland racked up a mammoth 5-470 before declaring, with opener Angus Lovell making an unbeaten 250. Given his chance to bat in the second session at the Junction Oval, Maxwell, batting with aggressive sideways stance which help him smash a whirlwind one-day double-century at last year’s World Cup, swatted spinner Jack Sinfield back over his head for a first-ball six. But in true Maxwell fast-forward fashion, his push to make more runs than he faced balls was his undoing. Maxwell, who is looking to get im to Victoria’s Sheffield Shield team for an MCG clash with NSW, to push his claims for a return to Sri Lanka with the Test team in February, 2025, was out for just 14 off 19 balls. He holed out to deep square leg, looking for another boundary, and trudged off after a short stay, a hammer blow having spent five sessions in the field. Maxwell may get a chance to bat again, with Victoria battling at 4/140 in pursuit of Queensland’s massive first innings total in the four-day game. Victorian Sheffield Shield captain, Will Sutherland, is also playing as he continues a comeback from injury.
