State Government seeks input on Aboriginal cultural heritage law at upcoming Geraldton workshop

The State Government will be holding a workshop in Geraldton, inviting the public to comment on its new Aboriginal cultural heritage framework.

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 was passed by State Parliament in December last year, but the Government said it was still looking for input into how the law would be implemented.

The Government said the new law was designed to provide a more modern system for recognising and protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage .

Consultation has been ongoing throughout the year and is in its third phase.

“The regulations are extremely important in determining how the new Act will operate and the co-design process will ensure it balances the expectations of the wider community,” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Tony Buti said earlier this year.

“I encourage all interested stakeholders to participate in this very important process.”

The Geraldton workshop will be held on Monday, November 28 from 10am-2.30pm.

The Geraldton workshop is one of many being across the regions, with sessions in Carnarvon on November 21, Shark Bay on November 23, Meekatharra on November 30 and Mt Magnet on December 1, as well as an online Statewide session being held on December 1.
