Cycle path behind African Reef Hotel set for upgrade to fix safety concerns, set for November finish

Works have commenced on upgrading a cycle path in Geraldton’s southern suburbs, with safety being highlighted as the cause.

The cycle path is behind the African Reef Hotel, and connects Upton Court to Willcock Drive in Tarcoola Beach along the coast.

The $350,000 project has been partly funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the upgrades would make the path safer for all users.

“Currently, the natural gradient of the hillside makes the existing path steep and difficult for riders to maintain slower speeds and stop quickly when needed,” he said.

“Construction of the 203m long and 3m wide concrete shared path will remove a sharp curve and reduce the slope which will make it easier and safer to use by pedestrians and bike riders.

“The design also includes a handrail to assist pedestrians and riders who may need help getting up and down the path.”

Red Dust Holdings and Redcat Holdings have been tasked with creating the new path.

The path will be closed to the public while construction takes place.

The new path is set to be finished by the end of November.
