WA bushfires: Wickepin and Corrigin locals flee emergency, spend night at Pingelly’s evacuation centre

Worried about their towns and homes, but comforted by the caring nature of those around them, a group of about 40 Wickepin and Corrigin residents spent the night at Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Precinct on Monday. Forced to flee as the flames bore down on the outskirts of the Wheatbelt towns, they grabbed their most precious belongings before heading to Pingelly and anxiously waiting for news from home. It was a sleepless night for most, some resting in their cars, others on blow-up mattresses or camp stretchers with sleeping bags and pillows on the centre’s basketball court. “You just pray like hell that you’ve still got a house when you come home, because that’s about all we’ve got — what we’re wearing,” Wickepin local Hilton Kirby said. “Are you going to see your house again?” Shire of Pingelly president William Mulroney said about 40 people — including eight from Corrigin and the rest from Wickepin — had spent the night at the evacuation centre before it closed at 2pm. “We got a request from the CEO of the Shire of Wickepin to open the evacuation centre because at that time the fire was getting close to Wickepin, and the Shire decided they should evacuate the town,” he said. “And that is when the process was put into place and we went through the contact liaison officer in DFES. I liaised with them and they activated the Department of Communities to come and set up. “Everyone banded together and we had Pingelly volunteers give their time to help.” Mr Mulroney said the centre would remain in place “as long as it was needed”. When Wickepin resident Ruth Bailey received the message to leave, she said it was “unbelievable”. Soon after, the sounds of sirens and plane engines filled the air as ground and aerial crews swooped in to tackle the blaze. “The streets were absolutely chockers with firetrucks,” she said. Fleeing with the clothes on their back, important documents and photographs, they were met with an “eerie” smoky haze along the road to Pingelly — which at that stage was the only way out. “There was smoke all over the place and the (emergency) lights make it look more (eerie),” Mr Kirby said. “I saw 30-40 cars all going out of Wickepin on the Pingelly road ‘cause it’s the only way out, you couldn’t go Yealering, couldn’t go Narrogin.” Wickepin grandmother Sandra Neary first found out about the blaze on the radio as she and three of her grandkids Izaiah, 7, Ava, 6, and Malia, 3, were heading home from a visit to family in Perth. “We were in Perth for my grandson’s first birthday and on our way home, just outside of Narrogin we heard on the news that Wickepin had been evacuated,” she said. They dashed home, grabbing clothes, their teddies, their bird Benji — who was kept in a shoebox with air holes to reduce stress — and a portrait of Mrs Neary’s son and the children’s father Matthew, who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident 12 months ago. They joined a group of Wickepin locals at the centre, keeping each other company and keeping each other updated with any developments, with a major concern being whether the power — which had been out for 24 hours — would be back on when they came home.
