The Broome Closet and Roebuck Bay Hotel shortlisted for the Australian Hospitality Awards for Excellence WA

Two Broome venues are being recognised among the best in the State, with new boutique cocktail bar The Broome Closet and the well-known Roebuck Bay Hotel nominated for eight separate WA Australian Hospitality Awards for Excellence. A vibrant newcomer to Chinatown’s nightlife, The Broome Closet has earned nominations in the small bar, cocktail bar, and new hospitality venue categories. Co-owner Shane Edwards, who opened the bar with his partner Stuart Layzell in May, said the nominations came as a surprise but it was incredibly exciting. “We’re only a relatively new business, so as a new venue, we’re very excited about being nominated,” he said. Known for its intimate vibe infused with a tropical flair, the boutique cocktail bar provides a unique drinking experience where people can escape to a hidden gem inspired by metropolitan cocktail bars, but with a Broome twist. “We wanted to create something a little bit different for Broome, something that wasn’t here already,” Mr Edwards said. “The clientele and locals have been really great, and are embracing it.” Running a cocktail bar in a remote location presents its own set of challenges, from navigating supply logistics, to adjusting to Broome’s seasonal shifts. Despite these obstacles, the team are committed to curating an experience that meets local tastes and current cocktail trends. “We do a lot of scouting on Instagram and sign up to a range of publications to find out the latest trends,” Mr Edwards said. “It’s just about listening to people and seeing what works and what doesn’t.” Alongside its curated menu, The Broome Closet offers table service with knowledgeable staff who guide patrons through their drink options and create custom cocktails upon request. “People are going to come and buy a cocktail, they’re going to spend a bit of money on a cocktail — they want to get something they’re going to enjoy,” Mr Edwards said. “We’re also about creating things that people want, as well. So if they come in with a cocktail that’s not on our menu, we do our best to try and make that for them.” The Roebuck Bay Hotel — affectionately known as The Roey — is also a major contender in the AHA WA awards, with nominations in the marketing and promotions, live entertainment, and casual pub dining (regional) categories. Recognised as a local favourite and a key social hub, and built by London jeweller E.W. Streeter to lure pearling crews to spend time in the North West town, the 132-year-old hotel continues to attract patrons with its vibrant events and laid-back dining options. Additionally, two of the hotel’s key team members have received individual nominations, with head chef Brontey Mitchell nominated for the head chef award, and venue manager Tamara Jane Burchell nominated for the venue manager award. The pub was nominated for the late night venue award at last year’s awards, when it competed against Perth venues such as Market Grounds, the Subiaco Hotel and Universal Bar, and Kalgoorlie’s Exchange Hotel. The Australian Hotels Association and Coca-Cola Hospitality Awards for Excellence will be presented at the Lion Gala Ball on November 11 at Crown Perth.
