Cowaramup Bay Boardriders leading in swell season
The Cowaramup Bay Boardriders season is under way for 2025 with club regulars enjoying a competition at the weekend in good conditions.
The March 9 contest was the second competitive event for the season and was blessed with bigger swells.
Club president Keighley Bremner said the club’s young members got the chance to display their talents in good-quality waves on the South Point side of the bay.
“The level of surfing was again extremely high with non-stop action in the water for the duration of the event,” he said.
“The club has that much talent it is hard to single out just a couple of kids.”
Mia Jacobs led the senior girls in the round two contest ahead of Leila Fraser, Sienna Bowdell and Asha Clarke, while Paige Hayward and Ily Fraser scored mentions in the junior girls following Rosie Annesley and Indi-Rose Badger.
In the age-grouped boys’ contest, senior surfers Reef and Finn Lange took the first two places followed by Ethan Ahola and Rylan Vincent.
In the under-16 boys Ace Flynn, Jahli Clarke, Taylor Flynn and Zenn Hammond won in order, with Angus Taylor and Sammie Cook leading the under-14 boys and Zaden Harper and Oscar Cawley top the under-12 boys.
Event three will be held later this month, while the club plans to hold a camp for members in May. The round four competition will be held in June and then the Gracetown Grommets in September before more competitions in the back end of the year.
Bremner said he wanted to thank sponsors as well as volunteers for making the season possible for the club’s young members.
“One last thankyou to the surfing community for its wonderful support and patience on event days,” he said.
“It makes a real difference when our fellow surfers are so understanding and allow the competitors to surf the location without large numbers of non-competitors in the line-up.”
Bremner said the club was running well with membership at capacity, ranging from eight-years-olds to 17-year-olds with an even split between boys and girls.
He noted the novice division was bigger than usual, boding well for future years.
