Capes surfers to take on longboard competition at Denmark this weekend

Capes surfers will head further south this weekend for the first round of the WA Longboard Championships.

Denmark’s surf-rich haven Parry Beach will be the lure for longboard aficionados contesting divisions in all age ranges.

Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said the Capes region would send a strong cohort to contest the premier longboard event’s first round.

“South West surfers are always a force to be reckoned with and the journey to Denmark is always a favourite amongst the longboard fraternity,” he said.

Among the names to watch are Dunsborough contestants Ryan Clark, Shae Sheridan and Paul Burke, while Margaret River’s Amanda Curley is an odds-on favourite for the women as the reigning Over-50s champion.

Veterans Doug Carruthers and Bill Gibson, plus Dunsborough pair Barrie McKinnon and Brett Merifield, are expected to suit up for the day.

Clark is considered the leading contender in the open men’s division and will go up against Anthony Spencer (Trigg), Jordan Morris (Hillarys), Scott Trew (Gabbadah) and Dane Quirk (Exmouth).

Majeks said the battle for the 2024 State title was “promising to be nothing short of epic”.

Winners in the 13 divisions will qualify for the Australian Longboard Titles which will be held later this year.
