Unique Anzac Day tribute: 20 Surf boats to be rowed into Cottesloe Beach to honour Gallipoli landings
A wave of surf boats will be rowed to shore on Cottesloe Beach in a unique tribute as the sun rises on Anzac Day.
As many as 20 boats with crews from surf clubs from Perth and regional WA will take part in the event, ten years after two surf boats from WA took part in symbolic row to shore on the Gallipoli peninsula on the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings.
This year’s event, organised by the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club, is expected to see as many as 20 boats rowed to shore.
Included will be boats from Cottesloe and Trigg Island, the two WA clubs which had crews among 26 surfboats from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey which took part in a two day event in 2015, known as Gallipoli 100.
This Anzac Day’s event is known as Gallipoli 110.
After the surf boats reach the beach a formal service will be conducted, with nearly 100 rowers presenting oars.
Cottesloe crew member Rob Turner said the special event and service was a way to honour the Diggers who landed on the beach at Gallipoli 110 years ago.
Those who wish to watch the row-in are advised to be at the beach by 6.15 am.
Breakfast will be available at the clubrooms afterwards and coffee will be on sale.
