A talented bowling quartet from the Great Southern conquered all at the Women’s State Fours Championships by winning the title in Perth on Sunday.

After a gruelling 18 ends, Lower Great Southern Bowling Zone’s composite side containing Middleton Beach duo Anne Hornibrook and Beryl Cooper, Mt Barker’s Karen Miller and Newdegate’s Bridget Mitchell defeated the Safety Bay team in a rousing final 21-16.

Hornibrook said it was an extremely intense encounter but credited her teammates’ chemistry and cohesion under immense pressure.

“We were very much the underdogs and we surpassed our expectations well and truly,” she said.

“The concentration was out of this world, we were determined to beat them because everyone on the sidelines were barracking for the other team.

“We were a really good team in that we gelled extremely well and really I think we were taking it one game at a time.

“We’re super proud and it hasn’t sunk in that we’ve won it and we’re absolutely thrilled with ourselves for winning.”

The brilliant quartet booked their spot in the decider with a hard-fought 18-16 semifinal victory over Manning following on from their 14-10 quarterfinal triumph over Morley.

Their stellar campaign began on Saturday, October 5 at Ellenbrook Bowling Club when they smashed a South West composite side 20-7 before seeing off Willetton with a 15-9 victory.

They ended their three-round qualifiers with a 15-10 win against Sorrento to advance through to the first round of finals at Kardinya Bowling Club on Sunday, October 6 where they beat Mosman Park 17-8.

The spectacular State title victory means the Great Southern foursome will represent WA at the national championships in Tasmania in November next year.
