Denmark residents hold Black Lives Matter rally

Denmark residents held a rally last week to honour US man George Floyd and push for an end to the racism faced by Aboriginal Australians.

A small crowd gathered on the corner of Strickland Street and South Coast Highway last Monday waving hand-painted signs and native flowers.

The group took part in an acknowledgement of country and discussed how they could campaign for change on home soil.

The group stood in silence for nearly nine minutes to honour George Floyd, 46, whose death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer on May 25 sparked a global tidal wave of protests against racism and police brutality.

Denmark organiser Julie Marsh said it was time to take a stand against inequality.

“We are all citizens of Earth, and people of colour have been marginalised in our society for many generations,” she said.

“We can be the generation that seek for all lives to be equal.”
