Denmark brothers Jake and Jy Drummond crowned national mountain biking enduro champions after elite showing

Denmark brothers Jake and Jy Drummond are the toast of the town after being crowned national champions at the 2024 Auscycling MTB Enduro National and Oceania Championships, held in Collie last month. After five gruelling and technical stages competing against some of the best riders from across the nation from October 17-20, the pair were named national champions. Jake, 16, won the under-17 men’s category, while Jy, 14, who won the State championship earlier this year, clinched the men’s under-15 title. With limited high-end downhill trails in the Great Southern, the pair regularly travel hundreds of kilometres to Nannup and Collie to train. After nervously waiting for the rest of the field to finish the final stage before he was announced the winner, Jake said the victory had not yet sunk in. “I’m still trying to take it in, and I’m pretty stoked,” he said. “I definitely felt good on the first track. I was really happy and I pushed really hard. “I knew I was riding really well, but I just didn’t know how well. “But when I came in on the last race, my name went straight up to the top of the board, but I was one of the first riders in, so I was waiting and waiting. “I was waiting for like an hour, maybe more . . . and as more people came in I was like ‘I think I may have won it’ — I was pretty nervous. “I knew I was going to be up there, but I wasn’t sure I was going to win, but just to get it on home soil, I’m stoked. “Dad told me Jy had won, so I was like ‘now I have to win’, so it’s pretty cool me and (Jy) becoming national champions together.” Jy said the national triumph was satisfying to share with his brother after months of hard work. “I’m just real happy that all the effort I’ve put in has paid off, and it just shows that all the training and hard work gets good results,” he said. “I was pretty confident, but I wasn’t too sure, because it was like heaps of over-east boys coming, and new competitors that (I) haven’t seen.” The brothers are targeting more interstate races, starting with the Maydena Enduro Jam in Tasmania on November 30.
