Albany Classic men’s and women’s title taken out by Joondalup as players flock to greens for Albany Classic

Joondalup Golf Club won both the men’s and women’s titles in the Albany Classic at Albany Golf Club over the long weekend, with a record field of competitors lining up for a shot at the iconic event. Albany Golf Club said they had a “fantastic field” of 200 golfers register for the annual weekend from clubs across the State, but it was the metropolitan clubs that shone through in the placings. Joondalup’s George Barclay brought home the men’s 36-hole gross competition with a score of 143, a comfortable three points ahead of Adam Bailie from The Vines, with fellow Joondalup player Tom Addy biting at Bailie’s heels to finish on 147. Albany young gun Tain Piri came in fourth on 148. Joondalup’s Amie Phobubpa swept the late stages to score a one-shot win over Royal Fremantle’s Amanda Gan to take out the women’s 36-hole gross title, with Mt Lawley’s Valerie Khuu (151) and The Vines’ Brooke Price (155) rounding out the top four. Albany made a strong showing with three wins in the women’s competitions across the weekend. Julie Wright and Sally Carey picked up wins for Sunday’s 18-hole net competition and the 36-hole net senior title respectively, and Judy Loveridge was runner up in the 36-hole net competition. Marion Nelson stepped up for Denmark, taking home the 36-hole net title on 71 points, as well as the 36-hole senior gross title with a score of 165.
