Screen Queen reviews: The Resort is equal parts The White Lotus and Scooby Doo. Here’s why you’ll love it
The Resort
Tonight, streaming on Stan
Put your hand up if you love a good old-fashioned TV whodunnit? I’ve been a huge fan for as long as I can remember. I used to inhale episodes of Midsomer Murders while staying with my gran. Together, we’d try to sniff out who the murderer was. She was weirdly — and worryingly — good at it.
Recently, my inner Nancy Drew has had lots to keep her busy — there’s been stacks of great TV mysteries doing the rounds. I’ve spent hours, months, YEARS of my life trying to work out what’s been going on in Stranger Things, and each week I obsessively try to unravel the latest clues on Only Murders in the Building. I also enjoyed the massively underrated The Afterparty on Apple TV.
My latest TV obsession is the very excellent, The Resort. From writer Andy Siara and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, this comedy drama plays out like The White Lotus meets Scooby Doo — need I say more?
Starring The Good Place’s William Jackson Harper (at last he’s back on our screens!) and Palms Springs’ Cristin Milioti, it’s about a married couple who travel to Mexico to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary only to end up unexpectedly investigating an extremely strange mystery that occurred 15 years before.
I’m still only a few episodes in, but I can already tell there are lots of hidden clues in this, and more than once I’ve had to rewind to watch something again. If my granny was still around, she’d love this — and she’d have already figured out what’s afoot.
I can’t wait for you to see this.
Industry
Tuesday, streaming on Binge
True story: I briefly attended an elite business school outside Paris — I was there as a “partner” of one of the students. I didn’t come out of it with an MBA and a bajillion dollar salary (boo!), but I did learn a thing or two about the world of high finance and the people who inhabit it.
Season two of Industry lands this week, and it’s full of the types of people I met during my time hobnobbing with obscenely smart, rich people. Can confirm: they’re all pretty awful. But this show is pretty great, and season two starts brilliantly.
I love to hate this show.
Heartbreak Island
Thursday, streaming weekly on 7plus
This is what happens when you take a bunch of strangers off Tinder and plonk them on an island and force them to do Survivor-style challenges. As awful/awesome as it sounds.
The Sandman
Friday, streaming on Netflix
Based on the super popular DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman is all sorts of crazy, fantastic fun, and sure to land well with fans. Did I like it? Not sure, but it’s worth a look.
The Outlaws S2
Friday, streaming on Prime Video
Series one of this British crime caper was a massive hit in the UK, streamed a whopping 11 million times on BBC iPlayer. Series two drops this week. If you’ve not caught it yet, watch from the beginning and catch up.
