Watch the Mercedes-AMG One shatter its own Nurburgring lap record

Think the Mercedes-AMG One’s last Nürburgring run was impressive? It’s now gone even quicker around the notorious Nordschleife.

When Maro Engel piloted the One in 2022, he set a new production car record of six minutes and 35.183 seconds around the 20.832km track – but it was obvious damp patches held the GT3 ace back from going all-in.

That’s now changed, with Engel taking advantage of clearer September conditions to raise the bar, setting a new record of six minutes and 29.090 seconds, some six seconds faster than the previous attempt to further the benchmark.

Onboard footage of the lap shows the driver’s precise inputs and the violent speed of the AMG One, which is now 14 seconds clear of the second-placed Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Racing on the list of Nürburgring production car laps.

“Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp,” said Mr Engel.

“We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG One.”

Powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 – derived from Mercedes-AMG’s Formula One cars which dominated from 2014 until 2021 – and four electric motors, the One has a claimed total power output of 782kW, good enough for a top speed of 352km/h.

Engel’s new record lap could’ve been even quicker, had he not lifted early into some corners to regenerate energy to charge the battery pack, which was used to provide up to 450kW of power.

Only one AMG One is so far on public display in Australia, with trucking magnate Lindsay Fox allowing punters to see his circa-$3.8 million at the Fox Classic Car Museum in Docklands, Melbourne.
