The third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is arriving in Australia in May, when the all-new mid-sized SUV range will once consist of five variants.

Volkswagen Australia will release pricing closer to the new model’s local launch.

For now, it’s touting the fresh look inside and out, and the addition of a raft of new features to the base 110TSI Life as proof this is a “mini Touareg”.

The new Tiguan will be offered exclusively as a five-seater, with the outgoing seven-seat, extended-length Tiguan Allspace to be replaced later this year by the Tayron.

The all-petrol range is as follows:

  • 110TSI Life, 110TSI Elegance: 110kW/250Nm turbocharged 1.4-litre, front-wheel drive
  • 150TSI Elegance, 150TSI R-Line: 150kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, all-wheel drive
  • 195TSI R-Line: 195kW/400Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, all-wheel drive

All models will come standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 150TSI splits the difference between the old 132TSI (132kW/320Nm) and 162TSI (162kW/350Nm).

The third-generation Tiguan has moved to the MQB Evo platform and measures 30mm longer than before, with luggage space expanding by 37L to 652L (measured to the top of the rear backrests). This expands to 1650L with the rear seat folded.

Sleeker styling has also resulted in a superior drag coefficient, down from 0.33 to 0.28Cd.

150TSI and 195TSI variants now feature Volkswagen’s new DCC Pro adaptive chassis control system with two-valve shock absorbers, and selectable Comfort, Sport and Individual drive modes.

The base Tiguan 110TSI Life now features standard 19-inch alloy wheels (up from 18s), a larger touchscreen (12.9 inches versus 8.0 inches), a surround-view camera, and a power tailgate.

Volkswagen says the interior is more premium than before, with more “soft-touch mid- and lower plastics” that make it reach “premium vehicle standards”.

You can now get the more highly specified Elegance trim with the least powerful engine, with the 110TSI Elegance offering much of the same kit as the 150TSI Elegance as standard.

Elegance grades now also feature ventilation and massaging functions for their front seats.

While the Tiguan R is no more, an R-Line version of the 195TSI will be offered.

With 195kW of power and 400Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four, it’s down on power – if not torque – compared to the 235kW R.

It also takes a claimed 5.9 seconds to do the 0-100km/h sprint, instead of 5.1 seconds.
