Alan peeled away the wrapping and revealed a camera. There were boxes of attachments – lenses, flashes, a stand. All of this looked expensive, more than they could afford. Carla was waiting for his reaction, twisting her ring. He raised an enquiring eyebrow. He had expressed no interest in photography. She picked up the wrapping paper.

‘It’s not digital. You know, old style, with film. It was second hand, very cheap, but they said it all works. I thought a hobby...’ She folded the silver paper in her hands over and over, smoothing it into the smallest possible square. ‘Anyway. Happy birthday.’

‘Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Happy birthday,’ the children echoed one by one. ‘Dad.’
