Brendan O’Kane used amateur football as a launching pad towards his WAFL dreams.

And he used amateur footballers as a launching pad for some incredible hangers, like the one that could see him win this year’s Streamer Screamer.

The backman was struck down by an agonising ACL tear in the reserves just weeks after joining Subiaco’s ranks, but before the long and gruelling rehab, he was flying for marks at amateur club Swan Athletic.

One incredible piece of athleticism was caught on camera, but O’Kane says there was an element of luck — because he was playing out of position.

“I was actually in the wrong spot, according to my coach, I was meant to be a bit further back, but one of the boys kicked out of full-back and I was playing ruck that day so was down the line and luckily I was in that spot,” he said.

“It was a pretty strong wind, I sort of came forward thinking it wasn’t going to carry all the way and lucky enough there was a bloke underneath me.

“I like to try and get up for them and I do get up for a few, but not many have come down like that where I’ve held them — one of a few.”

O’Kane launched off his opponents back and took to the skies, with the ball taking only a slight juggle as he landed on his back with it clutched to his chest.

He might be well on the way to a State league career, but community sport and his home club still hold a special place for the 24-year-old.

“They are still real welcoming here, all the boys I played with growing up are still here so I bounce between the two,” O’Kane said.

“I still get down to all their games and all their functions.”

O’Kane’s hanger is one of the first batch of Streamer Screamer finalists to be shown on 7NEWS last night, presented by West Coast Eagles goal-kicking champion Josh Kennedy — who will share his top three highlights of the week each Wednesday, before the final winners are picked out by our experts and announced on September 28.

The competition is a chance to showcase the best of the best from all sorts of community sport across WA.

Highlights can come from any sport, any year and can even be of someone else — as long as you’ve got their permission to share it and at least one of you are WA residents.

Entries are now open and close at 8pm AWST on Tuesday September 27, register to Streamer at streamer.com.au and upload your clip to win.
