Clarkson resident Brian Montgomery a man on a mission with new novel Ty and community musical program The Play
Watching their child experience the heartbreaking effects of bullying is a pain no parent should endure, but one Brian Montgomery knows only too well.
The 58-year-old Clarkson resident, community development consultant and writer is turning that pain into purpose, propelling him on a deeply personal mission.
It began with his newly released first major published work Ty, a novel for readers aged 12 years and older that centres on 14-year-old protagonist Tyrone Lewis.
Montgomery describes the book as a powerful and gritty story that intertwines resilience, adventure and self-discovery.
“Ty is an engaging, coming-of-age story that explores courage, connection and the defining choices we all face, set against a gripping backdrop of adventure and personal growth,” he says.
“Its universal themes resonate just as strongly with adults.”
Funds raised through the sale of Ty will support Montgomery’s next project, The Play, an innovative community musical program that uses creativity and performance, through storytelling and music, to inspire, educate and empower individuals to find their voice.
“The Play is for everyone — especially those who’ve felt silenced or marginalised,” Montgomery says.
“It’s a platform for anyone grappling with issues like bullying, racism, homophobia or loneliness to express themselves through the power of song.
“Even bullies are encouraged to participate, using music as a path to redemption and understanding, making The Play a truly transformative journey.”
Montgomery’s ultimate goal is to establish The Play as a sustainable, community-driven initiative that transforms lives across multiple locations.
His aim is to launch pilot events within the next 12 months, particularly in schools where the need is greatest.
“The catalyst was seeing the urgent need for a creative platform that empowers young people and communities to tell their stories, explore their talents and build resilience,” he says.
“However, I am currently facing challenges in securing the support needed to bring this vision to life.
“This is a heartfelt call for support — from communities, schools, and anyone who believes in the power of creativity and connection. Together, we can create a movement that inspires, heals and uplifts.”
