South West slaughters Peel

The South West Football League (SWFL) dominated Peel to win the A-section 2011 Landmark Country Championships grand final.

SWFL defeated Peel 17.13 (113) to 6.3 (39) at Medibank Stadium on Sunday, controlling the game from the first whistle and keeping Peel scoreless for the third quarter.

Avon’s hopes of a return to A-section were crushed by Ongerup which took out the B-section grand final 12.8 (80) to Avon 9.11 (65).

Ongerup took the lead early but Avon fought back to be within seven points at the start of the fourth quarter, however, Ongerup held on for the surprise win.

The Central Wheatbelt Football League defeated the Hills Football Association 14.11 (95) to 12.17 (89) taking out the C-section premiership.

The first year of the six-team colts division resulted in Kimberley Spirit taking out their first grand final, defeating the hitherto dominant South West by just one point, 11.11 (77) to 11.10 (76).

WA Country Football League general manager Cameron Knapton said the standard at this year’s carnival was exceptional.

“We knew A-section was going to be very strong this year, ” he said.

“It was great to see how much effort the leagues have put into their sides and the quality of the football we’ve seen has been fantastic.

“This year’s Landmark Championships provided an opportunity for players to showcase their talents at the highest representative level of football for local leagues.”

More than 500 players, in 21 teams, across four divisions, travelled to Perth for the four-day Landmark Country Championships.
