Next gen wool packs set for release

The next generation of wool packs will be introduced later this year in an effort to improve road transport compliance.

Following two years of extensive trials, the upgraded Australian wool pack standard is the answer to over-width loads of wool on trucks, according to AWEX.

The key changes are the introduction of a four-seamed base and a bale fastening guide on each flap.

AWEX chief executive Mark Grave said the new wool pack construction would provide greater structure to the wool bale, a square base and reduced bulge.

"The BFG will provide wool pressers with a mark to pull the bale fastener to when closing a bale," he said.

Mr Grave said this was a best practice mark.

"While over length bales appear to be a relatively simple matter to resolve, we were conscious that the solution needed to be pragmatic and recognise the investment woolgrowers have in infrastructure, and minimise any implications for the cost of wool logistics through the pipeline," he said.

It is expected woolgrowers will start to see the new designed wool packs by the end of 2013. A copy of the paper is available at the AWEX website.
