Mouritz cuts ties with Libs

Hyden farmer Jane Mouritz will cut ties with the Liberal Party and run as an independent for the Federal seat of O'Connor.

Mrs Mouritz's nomination is provisional on being ratified by the Australian Electoral Commission late this week after nominations close.

The farmer has stood for the Senate several times but due to family commitments did not stand for pre-selection with the Liberal Party for the seat of O'Connor.

Her decision to run is due to frustration and the need to give voters in the electorate more choice.

Her campaign will focus on rebuilding understanding between rural Australia and cities, less red tape for agriculture and improved labelling on imported food and raw materials. "I'll also fight tooth and nail for regional infrastructure," Mrs Mouritz said.

Tourism, a rural bank review and tax considerations for parents sending children away to school are also on her agenda.

Mrs Mouritz is one of three candidates born in the Shire of Katanning including Liberal candidate Rick Wilson and National candidate Chub Witham.

Jean Robinson from Kojonup is running for the Citizens Electoral Council.
