Holstein milks dairy section

Broselinda Park Holstein stud put on a supreme performance during the 2015 IGA Perth Royal Show, with its entries judged the Holstein grand champion female, reserve grand champion female and later going on to be chosen both supreme senior and supreme intermediate all breeds dairy females.

Broselinda Park's senior champion cow, Acero Shottle Ruby, was sashed grand champion female in the Holstein section, later going on to be sashed supreme senior champion all breeds dairy female as well as placing first in the most shapely udder competition during the Holstein breed judging.

Judge Todd Wilson, of Shirlin Jersey Stud, in Tamworth, NSW, said the senior cow was "made just right".

"She has been in milk since January, she has a wide open and clean rump with tremendous depth of rib for her age," he said.

Earlier, in the senior cows age class, Mr Wilson said there was not a lot between both senior cows, but Acero Shottle Ruby was the most complete.

"She has tremendous bone quality, a soft and well-textured udder and great spring of rib," he said.

When judging the intermediate female class, Mr Wilson awarded Broselinda Park Aftershock Madge with the champion intermediate female sash.

She later went on to be made supreme intermediate champion all breeds dairy female.

Mr Wilson said the 33-month-old cow was the most complete animal in her class and had a great set of feet and legs, handled and tracked herself well and had a good depth and spring of rib.

He said when judging the intermediate all breeds class, he awarded the supreme sash to the young Holstein cow "without hesitation".

"She has tremendous balance throughout, a level hindquarter, great height and width and a top udder," Mr Wilson said.

After an absence from the ring in 2014, Victor Rodwell was back this year with some junior exhibits in the Holstein classes from his Acero Holstein Stud.

Judged both junior champion heifer and reserve junior champion heifer during the Holstein classes, Mr Rodwell's exhibits then went on to be crowned supreme junior champion all breeds dairy female and reserve supreme junior champion all breeds dairy female.

Placing first in the heifer born on or between January 1, 2014, and April 30, 2014, class, Mr Rodwell's heifer Acero Bubbaloo Lulu then went on to be awarded junior champion Holstein heifer.

Mr Wilson said she had a little more power in front than her competitors and blended nicely in the shoulder and neck.

"She is a pretty handy winner with a lot of top breed characteristics - she is the type of heifer that will turn into the type of cow I'd like to have," he said.

Of Mr Rodwell's younger reserve junior champion female Acero McCutchen Rae, Mr Wilson said she was a beautifully boned dairy heifer.

"She has tremendous width through her rump and handles her back legs very well," he said.

Mr Rodwell said both of his junior exhibits had done well in their age classes and that their success reflected his use of top bloodlines over many generations, including the use of Acero Mandel R.Rae, which is Australia's highest classified Holstein cow from one of the best-known cow families around the world, the Roxettes.

Ki-Orey Illawarra Stud principal Kim Thomas put on another fantastic display of Illawarra dairy cattle at this year's IGA Perth Royal Show.

Judge Mr Wilson said it was a shame the exhibits did not have more competition as there were some quality animals on display.

When awarding the senior champion female Ki-Orey Last Hope the grand champion female sash, he said even without her fantastic udder, she was the best exhibit because of her strength of top line, depth and width of fore rib and overall capacity.

Earlier in her age class, Mr Wilson said Ki-Orey Last Hope was carrying around a great amount of milk and it was a shame she had no competition in the older age class of cow born before January 1, 2011, in milk.

In the earlier heifer classes, where there were a total of five exhibits, Mr Wilson judged Ki-Orey Charlie as the junior champion female.

Mr Wilson said the 10-month-old heifer showed the most correctness and had the best feet and legs.

Later, when judging her in the grand champion class, he said she walked extremely well and had plenty of width through her ribs.
