Dumped sheep sparks animal cruelty investigation

Eucla Police are seeking information from the public regarding the discovery of a group of dead and badly injured sheep on the Eyre Highway in Mundrabilla yesterday.

Officers from Eucla Police Station were patrolling the Eyre Highway, when about 1.10pm they found five sheep that had been dumped in a rest bay on the side of the highway, in Mundrabilla.

Two of the sheep were dead, and the three that were still alive were seriously injured and close to death.

A police spokesman said the officers had no option but to euthanase the remaining three sheep.

"An assessment of the scene suggests the sheep had been dragged to where they were, and had been left to die from their injuries," the spokesman said.

"That section of the highway is used by sheep transport trucks that are moving sheep between WA and South Australia.

"It is not known how long the sheep had been there, however it is likely they had been there less than 24 hours, and most likely had been dumped at the location earlier the same day."
