‘These facilities have their time’: Resources Minister Madeleine King delivers ominous BHP Nickel West warning

Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King is not budging from her tough stance on Nickel West, likely hammering another nail into the coffin of BHP’s WA nickel arm. Speaking at The West Australian’s Leadership Matters breakfast on Tuesday the Resources Minister said it’s a “difficult time” for those in her electorate of Brand. Alcoa’s soon-to-be shut Kwinana alumina refinery and Nickel West’s Kwinana nickel refinery — which is also at risk of closure — sit within Brand. “It goes to show that these facilities sometimes do have their time,” Ms King said. “Unless there’s been continuous investment almost like year-on-year then we come against these challenges that Nickel West is facing.” BHP is set to decide the fate of its troubled Nickel West business in August. About 3300 jobs will be on the chopping block if it places the sprawling network of mines, concentrators and refineries on care and maintenance. There had been talk the Government could help fund the refurbishment of Nickel West’s vital Kalgoorlie smelter, or provide a different form of direct bailout, to stave off a potential shutdown of the WA nickel portfolio. But Ms King’s latest comments, combined with what she said at a mining summit last month, have seemingly put any hope of Government lifelines to bed. “On Nickel West we will work together as best we can ... these are ageing facilities, there are choices companies make to return capital to their shareholders, or 10 or 15 years ago maybe making upgrades to those facilities so that they last longer,” she said last month. “They (BHP) really chose not to upgrade the facilities and instead return capital to shareholders ... and they are perfectly entitled to that. But the price now is that the workers will probably face a different consequence.” A day after those words the The West Australian revealed BHP had injected $4.5 billion of investment into its WA nickel assets over the past five years. Ms King on Tuesday also reiterated that the $17.6 billion of production tax credits for producers of critical minerals unveiled in the Federal Budget last month will unlock “significant prosperity” for future generations of Australians. Nickel West in theory stands to benefit from the production tax credits, but those credits would not kick in until 2027. BHP is Australia’s largest company with a market value of about $221 billion.
