A Jetstar flight from Melbourne to Busselton has been diverted to Perth after it was struck by lightning.

The airline confirmed flight JQ900, which departed from Melbourne on Friday morning, had been re-routed to Perth Airport about 9.50am after the Airbus A320 was hit by lightning.

The passengers were then taken by road on the 220km journey to Busselton.

A Jetstar spokesperson said aircraft were “manufactured to withstand lightning strikes”.

“As part of standard procedures in these circumstances, the aircraft was required to be inspected by engineers on arrival,” the spokesperson said.

“As we don’t have engineers based in Busselton, the flight diverted to Perth for inspection.”

St John WA confirmed an ambulance had not been called to Perth Airport.

More to come.
